In my last article “Is Your Sleep Causing Poor Performance?” I explained how lack of the right kind of sleep can seriously affect your productivity at work and the quality (or even your length) of life. Today, we hear from Barry, who suffered from a serious case of snoring but overcame it with a simple solution. Let get Barry to explain … “For years I had been going to work, up to 4 days a week with a splitting headache. Now I knew it wasn't ‘the norm’ but my doctors didn't seem to take it too seriously when I asked them about it, often brushing my concerns off. My father had passed away from a brain tumour and for several years afterwards I remained very concerned that I was suffering with these headaches. Could I be suffering from a brain tumour as well? So I requested an electroencephalogram (EEG) to confirm my suspicions. The results were negative and it relieved my anxiety … at least in the short term. But my headaches gradually got worse. A few years later I married my second wife. My headaches continued but I kept pushing on, working around them as best I could to put ‘bread on the table’. But what I didn’t know was there was something lurking that was far more serious. We didn’t know it at the time but my wife was very ill and over the next few years she got sicker and sicker and spent a great deal of time in hospital. Meanwhile I got a couple of promotions in the NSW Public Sector and increased responsibilities at work. The combination of work and home stress meant my headaches increased in intensity and length. Eventually I was at my wits end, crippled by the headaches as well as tending to an ill wife (which was almost becoming a full time job in itself). I was frustrated by the lack of interest from my doctors and that no effective treatment options were available. I tentatively raised the issue one last time and finally (and really as a kind of afterthought) my doctor said ‘I suppose we could do a sleep apnoea study’. EUREKA.... something positive at last. The day for the study had arrived. I was admitted to a private hospital for an overnight stay. But when I returned to my doctor for the results I was astounded - several apnoeas an hour were recorded throughout the night of my study. In fact I was only getting 69% oxygen during my sleep! I was thrilled - not because of the lack of oxygen - but because I now knew why I had been suffering with those debilitating headaches for so many years. The solution? I hired and was fitted with a CPAP machine – there were several to test over the comping weeks before choosing the final machine to purchase. Once in use, and the amount of oxygen pressure adjusted to my needs, I started to finally wake feeling much more refreshed without the constant headaches. Fast forward 17 years and I was still using the CPAP machine successfully, gradually upping the oxygen pressure. But I’d gained some weight and was feeling rather uncomfortable and bloated. I didn’t look very well and my clothes no longer were comfortable to wear. Something had to change. I saw one of Cindy’s flyers at my local chemist and got in contact with her about her program. Did you know that the quality of the sleep you get each night can seriously impact (positively or negatively) your effectiveness and productivity at work? It’s suspected that at least one third of workers get inadequate sleep – less that 7 hours - leading to an increased difficulty concentrating, learning, and communicating. And of those who do get the 7 hours, few are getting the necessary 1.5-plus hours of delta sleep (slow wave sleep or N3) which is necessary for your body to repair itself and recharge for the next day. Without this “deep sleep” your organs can’t detox, your kidneys can’t clean your blood, and your body can’t replace cells, heal wounds, or build muscle tissues. And that fully rested feeling when you wake up is replaced by a grogginess or feeling disoriented, at least until you get going. Sound familiar? Do this day after day and the cumulative effects of sleep deprivation become quite serious – reduced performance, increased risk of mistakes and even injury – all leading to a compromised bottom line for your employer and a reduction in your health. That’s why with all new clients I ask whether they snore. Commonly the answer from most is they don’t, although their partner tells them they do. They then put snoring down to having had a “few drinks” or being a bit more tired or stressed at work … but the list of excuses tends to go on and on ... But snoring is nothing to be excused. If you snore it means your sleep is being disrupted, and your body is constantly being prevented from transitioning into a deeper sleep as you end up tossing and turning all night. In fact heavy snoring may be associated with obstructive sleep apnoea, a serious sleep disorder where the walls of the throat relax and come together during sleep, blocking off the airway above the voice box so you stop breathing momentarily. But there’s a very serious side of snoring and sleep apnoea - it’s mighty dangerous. Apart from keeping your partner awake (and grumpy the next day) it’s a risk factor for heart disease, stroke, diabetes and many other health problems, let alone poor work performance. So why do people ‘make light’ of their snoring? I can only assume it’s a fear of having to deal with a problem that appears to be difficult to treat. Let’s face it the last thing people want to deal with is using a CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) machine and breathing like Darth Vader. It’s a very sexy thought – NOT. But reducing, or even eliminating snoring doesn’t have to be arduous. Did you know it’s estimated that one in four men over the age of 30 years have some degree of sleep apnoea? It’s more common than asthma! And a lot of the time people who snore don’t actually realise they are waking up to ‘kick start’ their breathing … and this can happen hundreds of times a night! So if any of the following sound familiar it might be time to take action: · daytime sleepiness, fatigue and tiredness · poor concentration · irritability and mood changes · impotence and reduced sex drive · need to get up to toilet frequently at night. So what’s the solution? If you suspect you have sleep apnoea then your first step should be to discuss the matter with your doctor who may refer you to a sleep clinic for assessment. But there a number of things that make snoring worse … · alcohol, especially in the evening · illnesses that cause reduced thyroid production or the presence of a very large goitre · large tonsils · medications like sleeping tablets and sedatives · nasal congestion and obstructions Apart from avoiding the above where possible, by far, the best treatment for snoring and sleep apnoea is losing weight - especially if you carry it around the chest and neck areas. Dr Lawrence Epstein, assistant medical director of clinical sleep medicine at Harvard-affiliated Brigham and Women’s Hospital says “If we can get people to lose weight, it would make both sleep apnoea and other health problems [such as heart disease] go away.” In fact losing just 10% of body weight can have a big effect on sleep apnoea symptoms. Do you know why type 2 diabetes is often described as a 'lifestyle disease'? This is because its onset, in most cases, is cased solely by the way a person chooses to live. Eat too much of the wrong foods, do minimal physical activity and soon those trousers you used to wear only a few short years back have no chance of fitting – ever. But what if you could ensure prevention of this disease quickly and almost effortlessly? We’re all busy – I get it. And sometimes there’s just not enough time in our day (especially if you work long hours or travel for work) to ensure ‘3 squares’ and a bit of exercise to at least keep the status quo on the bathroom scales. But the REAL issue here is that type 2 diabetes is a ‘silent killer’ – and to think of it as any less is downright dangerous. Even if some of its symptoms are present people tend to attribute them to being busy or 'getting older'. So by the time people finally get to see their doctor they are clinically obese and in drastic need of help. Yet around 50% of all cases remain undiagnosed, often for years. I had been placed on Rusozet for blood pressure problems and I had pretty bad knee pain from rheumatoid arthritis too. In my previous blog I led you through the journey I took when I discovered the ultimate weight loss cure, known as hCG. But after my trial I decided the hCG protocol shouldn’t be that hard. So I went on a mission to know everything I could about this hormone, how to use it, and how to tweak the original studies to make the program more varied and easier. I spent the next 3 years studying hCG, mainly in the US as there was no hCG knowledge base in Australia other than the Compound Pharmacy and the doctor that prescribed it. There was no one I could go to, no one to ask for help. I was on my own, exploring this uncharted weight loss opportunity. On my return I started running hCG trials, first on myself and then anyone in the family or any friends – men or women - who carried weight and wanted to get it off – 5, 10, even 20 kilos. We were the first guinea pigs to try my new magic weight loss solution. I not only learned so much during these trails, as I stretched and pulled Dr Simeon’s original protocol into the modern era, but I was getting phenomenal results for everyone on my version of the program. It was time to take this to the public, to others who wanted real, long lasting results. No longer were the only options a continued cycle of crash diets, or lap band surgery, or living with the depression of ever increasing pounds or inches. Finally I had found the natural solution that I’d been seeking. I needed to put the original protocol from Dr Simeons along with everything I’d learned so far into an easily digestible (pun intended) program for others to follow. There was a lot to do and I needed help. I established a network of doctors and hCG experts in the US and Europe that I could bounce ideas off and ask questions. I wrote my own hCG Diet Program manual, and had my Melbourne doctor proof read it to make sure what I written, from a medical perspective, was correct. Through the trials I conducted I also realised the only way to really help people get great results was to tailor the program to people’s individual lifestyles, and to stay in contact with them every day, monitoring their progress and helping them to climb any hurdles. So I studied life coaching and neuro linguistic programming (NLP), which was especially useful when helping clients with food (or other) addictions, or other emotional issues that could cause weight gain. I also learned a lot more about diseases associated with excess weight - diabetes, heart disease (high cholesterol and high blood pressure), strokes, gallbladder and kidney issues, asthma and breathing problems and arthritis - and how losing weight would alleviate the symptoms, and even in some cases cure them completely. I was fascinated by the food aspect of Dr Simeon’s protocol and why he prohibited certain types of food on the program. So I studied food and nutrition, and its effects on the human body. I learned (and tested) what other foods I could add to my unique program to maintain the original intent of Dr Simeon’s 1950s protocol whilst allowing additional variety for clients. Finally, in 2012, I was ready to go to market with a complete fully support coaching program for losing weight using hCG. And so Cindy Marr’s hCG Diet Program was born. Finding clients was difficult at first – who wanted to risk taking a pregnancy hormone, especially men, to lose weight? But I had the evidence-based results of my trials to back my program up. And when my new clients started getting amazing results they told their friends. And slowly news of my hCG program spread like an underground movement. And the rest, they say, is history … or is it just the beginning?
In 2008 I got on the scales …. I knew I was putting on weight, but I’d been in total denial. I’d never ever had issues with my weight - I could eat what I wanted, exercise if I wanted to or not, and I never put weight on … those scales never moved an inch! I finally summoned the courage to climb aboard … 86 kgs? That’s 20 kilos over my normal weight! I was gutted, more so because I didn’t know what I needed to do to get the weight off quickly and keep it off … for good. I’d lived my entire life around people who yoyo dieted, so I knew none of the traditional diets out there really worked … not one of them. I didn’t want to be like that … I didn’t want to yoyo. I’ve always had a holistic and slightly alternative approach to life, figuring that there’s always a natural solution to fixing whatever needs fixing. So I was sure nature must have a solution to weight loss, I just had to find it. So I went on the hunt …. But this was in the early days of Google so there wasn’t much on the internet other than mainstream diets which I knew wouldn’t work. While browsing I stumbled across a manuscript written by Albert T.W. Simeons M.D. called “Pounds & Inches, A New Approach to Obesity”. Dr Simeon’s weight loss program was based on Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (hCG), the pregnancy hormone. The only problem was he died in 1970, and his studies had been conducted in the 50’s. I doubted what I had found could mean much … if his studies were confirmed then hCG would be more widely known … maybe they were discredited as being untrue? The plot thickens! What I then discovered was a continuing campaign to discredit Dr Simeon’s findings. It turns out you can’t patent a naturally occurring human hormone, which is what hCG is. And with a diet industry worth billions of dollars every year, it seemed that someone didn’t want hCG out in the public domain. So it went underground, limited to the rich and famous and those in the know. But my curiosity prevailed. Dr Simeon’s manuscript was as vague as it was it was exciting. And if what he said was true, and his studies appeared to back it up, then perhaps I had found something akin to the ‘cure’ for weight loss and obesity? I continued to study everything I could find … and everything I studied continued to add up to a “oh, heck yes!” So I went looking for a source for this ‘miracle’ hormone. First I went to my doctor to request a prescription - she looked at me like I’d grown horns. The I rang all the Compound Pharmacies to ask if they made hCG and which doctors in Australia prescribed it. I finally found the one and only doctor in Melbourne who would. I made an appointment and got my bottle of miracle drops. Finally I could start my journey on the hCG weight loss program – let’s see if this really works. I couldn’t believe it - the weight was dropping off me! After 38 days I’d dropped 10 kgs – without feeling hungry or needing to exercise. It worked! But it was also the hardest and most restrictive diet I’d ever done … all I had was Dr. Simeon’s 1954 manuscript to follow, and it was pretty limited. But my journey didn’t stop there … I decided the hCG protocol shouldn’t be this hard.
